Lancia Y
Lancia Y was a compact car produced by this Italian company from 1995 to 2003. It was presented by a single type of the body — a three-door hatchback. As well as the previous model, Lancia Y10, Lancia Y enjoyed great sales, in particular on the Italian market.
Model I generation
Work on the new model intended to replace Lancia Y10 began in 1992. As designers planned, the new car had to combine classical lines of the old Lancia models, of legendary Lancia Ardea and Lancia Appia in particular, and at the same time had an original body. Enrico Fumia was engaged in the development of design. The hatchback was bright and expressive. Smooth bonnet with no power bulge visually merged with a net radiator grille which was traditionally executed in the classical brand shape. The body had a black plastic moulding running across the whole perimeter. Special Kaleidos programme offered 100 various colours of the body, both metallised and pastel, to individualize Lancia Y cars.
The passenger compartment of Lancia Y had four seats. “Soft touch” plastic was used for inner trimming, which was chic for small cars at that time. The dashboard, located in the centre, above the console, was the main distinctive feature of Lancia Y interior.
Originally Lancia Y cars were offered in three packages — LE, LS and LX; Elefantino Blu, Elefantino Rosso and Cosmopolitan were added to them over time. LE basic package had no exceptional success and existed till 1998. LS was the most popular package: it had seat upholstery of bright colours (red, blue or green), the dashboard with a tachometer and a sensor of external temperature, the central lock, and since 1998 it was also equipped with head restraints for back seats, manual air conditioner and rear-view mirrors with heating and electric adjustment. The luxury LX package, among other distinctive details, included large tyres and fog lights; passenger compartment was trimmed with alcantara of various colours. The Cosmopolitan package was intended for export variants of Lancia Y and differed from LX a little.
Model I generation restyling
In October, 2000 Lancia Y cars had a number of external and internal changes. The radiator grille became larger; bumpers, wheel covers, fog lights and back optics were renewed. Black plastic mouldings across the car perimeter became less prominent and were painted in body colour. New seats with hollow head restraints, the steering wheel borrowed from Lancia Lybra and slightly modernized dashboard became the most essential changes in the car.
In September, 2003, the presentation of the Lancia Ypsilon model took place; it succeeded the popular Lancia Y, of which over 800 000 copies were sold in 8 years of production.
