Lancia Thesis
The luxury Lancia Thesis sedan was released in only 16000 copies during the time of production (2002-2009). It was used by the government and the President of the Republic of Italy.
Lancia Thesis I generation
As Lancia Thesis succeeded the unpopular Lancia Kappa model (criticized for its outdated style and insufficiently luxurious interior) as brand flagship model, it faced a complex challenge — to revive the brand and win back the buyers’ loyalty.
In 1997 designers developed three prototypes — Tikal, Agorà and Arca. After a corporate vote, the Agorà, renamed Lancia Dialogos, was chosen for further development. In 2000 the special Lancia Dialogos version was produced for the Pope John Paul II (Giovanni Paolo II) which was called Giubileo.
In the end the stock Lancia Thesis practically did not differ from a prototype: only the radiator grille was shortened to make room for registration plate on the bumper, and bonnet ribs became less prominent. The name of the model was chosen with the purpose to evoke Lancia Thema — one of the most successful cars of the producer. The official presentation of Lancia Thesis took place in 2001 at the Geneva motor show, production began in 2002.
The sedan was 4890 mm in length and owed its appearance to the designer Mike Robinson. Designed in retro style, Lancia Thesis reminded of popular models of the 1950-60th years - Lancia Aurelia and Lancia Flaminia. The front part of the car was strikingly unique - the radiator grille was massive, headlights had a rhomboid shape, chrome headlight cleaners had triangle shape. There were a lot of chrome elements on the body of Lancia Thesis: door handles, window trimming, narrow mouldings on each side. The shortened rear part of the sedan drew attention with original optics: LED lights were grouped in narrow vertical blocks.
The Lancia Thesis dashboard featured a more traditional arrangement of elements, in comparison with Lancia Kappa. The CD changer on six disks was located in the glove box with the electric drive. Near the gear change lever there was a cup holder with cooling function. The rear window curtain with electric drive was controlled by buttons located on a rear seat armrest and near the gear lever. The inner trimming featured leather and mahogany.
Lancia Thesis I generation restyling
In 2006 at the Geneva motor show demonstration of updated Lancia Thesis took place: materials of internal trimming and disc design were changed, two-colour painting of the body was an additional option.
Initially it was planned to sell from 13 000 to 25 000 of Lancia Thesis per year. However in practice sales were sluggish: partly it was explained by internal crisis in the company, then unconventional and too original design of new model underwent criticism. Not the last role was played also by the price: Lancia Thesis cars cost as much as BMW 5 series, Mercedes-Benz of the E-class and Jaguar S-Type. Most of the cars were sold in Italy where they were used as office transport for the government of the country.
