Lancia Dedra
Lancia Dedra is the midsize car produced by the Lancia Company from 1989 to 2000. It was presented by two types of a body — a sedan and a station wagon. The model was produced to replace Lancia Prisma which was losing the competition to modern cars; for some time these two models were produced simultaneously.
Lancia Dedra I generation
In the late eighties the Fiat Group concern made the decision to produce four different models on the same platform to cut expenses. These cars had various characteristics and were aimed at different groups of consumers: Fiat Tipo had an optimum ratio of the price and quality, Fiat Tempra was versatile and practical, Alfa Romeo 155 had sports style and Lancia Dedra was elegant. All cars of the project achieved quite good commercial success.
The design of the body of Lancia Dedra, in which specialists of I.DE.A Institute studio were engaged, differed from the Lancia Prisma model predecessor insignificantly: it had a more modern radiator grille, rectangular back headlights, and also larger dimensions (length — 4340 mm, width — 1700 mm, height — 1430 mm) and an enviable drag coefficient — 0,29. Lancia Dedra cars were designed for drivers who couldn't afford buying more elegant and pricier models: these cars were bright, stylish, and comfortable, with a high level of equipment and high-quality materials of interior trimming. Much attention was paid to the comfort of drivers: height-adjustable seats, power steering wheel and electrically adjustable mirrors were added.
In 1994 the French body company - Heuliez - manufactured the five-door Lancia Dedra station wagon which was on sale quite successfully thanks to the high load-carrying capacity. The characteristics of the car were identical to the ones of the sedan.
Lancia Dedra I generation restylings
In 1993 Lancia Dedra cars had essential changes in the interior and equipment. Instead of conventional glass, Solar Control glass was installed in the windows, filtering sunlight and thus reducing heating of passenger compartment in hot weather. The body paint was available in ten colour options, seat upholstery materials were also updated. In 1994 the exterior of the car was also changed: the back optics were updated, the radiator grille received a chrome frame. The exhaust pipe became less prominent, which caused change of the rear bumper shape.
The last changes were made in 1998. Front headlights got narrower shape and became tinted, bumpers began to be painted in the colour of the body, new light-alloy wheels, and red rear lights appeared.
In September, 1999, the presentation of the Lancia Lybra model took place; it was the successor of Lancia Dedra model whose manufacture was completely stopped in January, 2000.
